About Us
We’re Back !!!! Live Big Band just for you!!
The Georgia Strait Big Band is proud to continue the tradition of Big Band music in the Comox Valley and beyond. A tradition which dates back over 60 years, when folks danced the night away at the Native Sons Hall on Saturday nights.
Leading the charge is Professor Gregory (Greg) Bush, “Professor of Jazz” at Vancouver Island University, who incidentally, drives every Monday night from his home in Nanaimo, to lead our Band…… then gently glides home to a restful week with the students….
Experience the high energy sounds of our Big Band by attending one of our upcoming gigs OR hiring the Georgia Strait Big Band for your next event.
Musical Director – Greg Bush
Originally from Montreal, Canada, Greg Bush earned his bachelors of fine arts degree from Concordia University and a Masters of Music in Jazz Performance from McGill University. He has served on the music faculties of McMaster University and Mohawk College in Hamilton, Ontario; and Red Deer College in Red Deer, Alberta.
AND a tour de force in the lower regions of JAZZ!! with a fine sojourn in Texas.
Once renowned for playing “hot jazz” in Lincoln, Nebraska he has gathered up his gems to share each Monday Night with us in the lower regions of the Elks Hall in downtown Courtenay.!
His first CD Cause and Effect, with The Greg Bush Quintet featured original compositions and garnered international acclaim. Please visit Greg’s Website at www.gregorybush.com
Band Manager – Rob Petersen
Easily the most lovable troubadour in our ensemble!!
Rob , a fine financier and money manager of long standing at the Royal Bank, has engaged his “beat” as our percussion section(re: “drummer”) for nigh on 12 years ….. and the beat goes on.
He engages all of us in a spirited gathering each Monday night in the depths of the Elks Hall, Courtenay Downtown.
With a flourish and a flair often reminiscent of the great foot stompers of the Jazz era he ensures we: pay our dues, remember our charts, replenish batteries for lights( and pacemakers), swab our horns/strings and dress for “success”!!
He’s the “goto” guy for the gigs, the gags, and the gaggle of fun we have emulating all the great artistes of this genre of delightful music…… call him, he’s fun!
